Meet Mr. Makinster







                    Kevin Makinster is currently the Director of Fifth Grade Bands at Linn-Mar Community Schools, a position he has held since 2000.  He began his teaching career in 1985, spending seven years as Band Director at Midland High School in Wyoming, Iowa.  In 1992 Mr. Makinster came to Linn-Mar where he served as Associate Director of High School Bands for eight years.  At Linn-Mar, fifth grade students are housed in six separate buildings and Band students have group Band and individual lessons one day per week.

                    Mr. Makinster, a Linn-Mar alum, is a 1985 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Music Education degree.  In 1998 he received his Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Coe College.  In addition, he has also completed over 45 hours of post-graduate work.

                    Mr. Makinster is active in Eastern Iowa as a guest conductor and adjudicator/clinician.  He has served as a guest conductor for both the Marion, and 5 Seasons Honor Bands, as well as several HS and MS conference Honor Bands.  He is also an adjudicator for NEIBA Large Group and Solo Contests.  He serves as a clinician at High School Marching Band contests in Marion, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and performs regularly on the Trumpet in the Cedar Rapids area as a member of the Heartland Brass.

                  Kevin lives in Marion with his three children, twins Jordan and Jeffrey, 10th graders at Linn-Mar High School, and daughter Emily, who is a 6th grader at Excelsior Middle School.  In his free time Kevin enjoys biking, swimming, running, competing in Triathlons, golfing, fishing and spending time outdoors.
