Indian Creek Elementary's Mini-Dance Marathon
All News Stories
Recently students at Indian Creek Elementary participated in a Mini-Dance Marathon to support efforts and help raise money towards the University of Iowa Dance Marathon. The University of Iowa Dance Marathon is the largest student run organization at the University of Iowa. Money raised by this event goes to help kids with cancer treated at the University of Iowa Hospitals. The University of Iowa Dance Marathon motto is “When there is a cure, we will dance for joy. Until then, we dance for LIFE!” And our Indian Creek students certainly showed lots of life in their dancing!
This Mini-Dance Marathon was a great way for Indian Creek students to learn the value of giving of one’s time, talent, and treasure to a service or cause outside of themselves. In addition, these students used the Mini-Dance Marathon as a way to pay tribute to Maddeson Tersinar, who would have been a 5th grade student at Indian Creek this year. Maddeson’s story is only one example of the many children who have been challenged by cancer. Indian Creek also has a first grader who is battling bone cancer and is receiving chemotherapy at University of Iowa Hospital. She is responding well to treatment. By taking part in the Dance Marathon, our Indian Creek students showed support for all children and families touched by cancer as well as those who are close to home.
Our students raised money for the University of Iowa Dance Marathon by bringing coins to school and contributing to coin jars, by purchasing stars for $1 to be displayed as part of our “stamp out cancer” bulletin board, by asking family and friends for donations to the Dance Marathon, and by attending the Indian Creek Dance Marathon on January 11th. The fundraising goal that Indian Creek Elementary set was $3,000. Our Indian Creek families raised over $10,000!
