Linn-Mar “Grand” Volunteer Wins Governor’s Award

Donna Bean volunteered more than 200 hours last school year

Marion, Iowa – Linn-Mar Community School District volunteer Donna Bean of Marion, Iowa received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Governor Kim Reynolds and Lt. Governor Adam Gregg during a special recognition ceremony held Tuesday, June 25th in Ankeny.

Donna was honored with an individual award by Linn-Mar Community School District for her continued support of educators and students in the Linn-Mar Community School District. Donna has dedicated much of her life in the field of education and her support as a volunteer continues to provide positive mentorship and guidance to fellow volunteers, educators and students. She volunteered over 200 hours this school year and has exceeded over 1200 volunteer hours within the district.

“We are grateful for the time Donna has devoted to Linn-Mar,” commented Linn-Mar Community School District Superintendent Amy Kortemeyer. “We’re fortunate to have a deep bench of active volunteers at our district, and we are deeply grateful for the invaluable support we receive from them. Donna’s volunteer hours are a selfless contribution toward enriching the educational experience of our students.”

Donna is one of the Linn-Mar district’s “Grand” volunteers. This program recruits seniors and grandparents from the Marion community and invites them to be an approved volunteer in the district. Currently the district has 1782 volunteers supporting the district, and 155 are in the “Grand” program.

More than 400 awards were presented during the Governor’s event this year. It is estimated that over 85 communities in Iowa were served by this year’s honorees.

“Those being recognized are the people who invest in others without expecting anything in return—except, of course, for the fulfillment that comes from doing their part to give back to their community,” said Gov. Kim Reynolds. “This collective impact is nothing short of remarkable.”

Coordinated by Volunteer Iowa, a bureau within the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS), the Governor’s Volunteer Award program—now in its 40th year—provides an easy way for Iowa nonprofits, charitable organizations, and government entities to honor their volunteers with a prestigious, state-level award.
