Indian Creek  Elementary

School History

In 1961, the district purchased five acres of land east of what was then the Main Elementary (the current Learning Resource Center). Indian Creek Elementary opened later that year, on September 5, 1961 under the leadership of Principal Richard Benz and a staff of 23.

In 1962, the school underwent renovations to add 10 classrooms to the school. Since then, the school has gone through various renovations including the addition of a new media center, gymnasium, classroom, and upgrades to the school’s infrastructure.

In 2016, Indian Creek Elementary was named a National Blue Ribbon School (one of 279 public schools to earn the award and one of only five Iowa schools to be honored). The award honors schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap.

  • 1961 – Indian Creek Elementary constructed

  • 1962 – Multi-purpose room and 10 classrooms were added to the school
  • 1995 – A new media center is built and extensive renovations are done
  • 1999 – A new gymnasium and classrooms are added
  • 2001 – The school is renovated including upgrades to infrastructure
  • 2011 – A new playground is installed
  • 2016 – Indian Creek Elementary is named a National Blue Ribbon School

Today, Principal Marilee McConnell and a staff of 65 are dedicated to provided the best possible education for their more than 530 students. Indian Creaks strives to develop and empower all learners to reach their highest potential and embraces the following mission statement: “Success for all, every day.”

Indian Creek is dedicated to making learning fun and focuses directly on the three Rs of being respectful, responsible, and ready.
