Highlights From the August 12th Board Meeting

Below are highlights from the August 12th Board of Education meeting.
Please note, these are highlights and not the official meeting minutes.

Strategic Plan origDuring the work session, Superintendent Bisgard shared the district’s 2019-20 Strategic Plan. The superintendent provided an overview of the plan’s key pieces which are Student Success, Future Focused, and Destination Linn-Mar. There will be more information to come regarding the district’s Strategic Plan in the near future.

Chief Financial/Operating Officer J.T. Anderson reviewed summer construction projects and provided an update on intermediate building construction progress.

Bowman Woods projects include: bathroom remodel, new interior doors, security cameras/access controls and a remodel of the pods.

Indian Creek projects include: bathroom remodel, new lighting/ceilings, locker replacement, sewer/floor replacement and security cameras/access controls.

Wilkins projects include: bathroom remodel, roof replacement, locker replacement, new windows, and new lighting ceiling tile.

Access controls and cameras were updated at the middle schools while there was roof replacement and a new HVAC unit installed at the high school.

Chief Officer of Human Resources Karla Christian provided a hiring update and a review of changes to the employee handbook. From July 2018 – June 2019, the district has hired 258 new employees (105 prior to school starting in August 2018).

The new hires include:

  • 78 Student Support Associates/Educational Assistants
  • 68 Classified/Exempt/Non-Exempt positions
  • 56 Teachers
  • 30 Aquatic Center positions
  • 26 Nutrition Services positions

For the 2019-20 school year, Linn-Mar welcomes a total of 40 new teachers:

  • 13 Elementary
  • 12 Middle School
  • 13 High School
  • 2 ELL

FoundationShelley Woods, executive director of the Linn-Mar School Foundation, shared a review of the Foundation’s achievements from 2018-19 and provided an overview of events planned for 2019-20. At the conclusion of the presentation, Woods presented a check from the Foundation for the district’s 1:1 Technology Initiative for the amount of $100,000! We thank the Foundation for their continued support of our students!

During the regular meeting, the Board of Education approved the Employee Handbook and Strategic Plan as presented.

The school board will host their next meeting on Monday, August 26th in the boardroom of the Learning Resource Center. The work session will begin at 5:00 pm and be followed by the regular meeting at 7:00 pm.
