2018 Iowa Radon Poster Contest March 1, 2018
Enroll By Mar 1, 2018 Organization American Lung Association Contact Stephanie Huber Email Stephanie.Huber@lung.org Age Range Elementary, Middle School

Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas produced by the natural decay of uranium in the soil. Exposure to elevated radon levels increases the risk of developing lung cancer. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is the number one cause of death in homes, surpassing falls, poisoning, fires, choking, and drowning. As all Iowa counties are considered at high risk, this contest provides an opportunity to educate Iowa youth and the general public. By participating in this activity, students will learn about radon and how to reduce their risk of exposure. In order to spread the message about radon’s health hazards, the American Lung Association and the Iowa Department of Public Health, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7 and the Iowa Radon Coalition host the annual statewide Iowa Radon Poster Contest. We are once again calling on Iowa citizens ages 9-14 to create a radon poster that will increase public awareness of radon gas and encourage others to test their homes. A committee will select the top three winning posters from throughout the entire state of Iowa to receive awards; the first place winner will receive $300, second place winner, $200, third place winner, $150, fourth place winner $100, and fifth place $50. Schools with the most submissions will receive $200. Full Contest details and additional radon information is available on the contest website at: www.Lung.org/radon. If you have questions about the radon poster contest, please contact Stephanie Huber at (217) 718-6692 or Stephanie.Huber@lung.org.
