Summer Opportunities – High School

Most colleges and universities have summer programs for high school students. Check their websites to see if a school of your interest has a program for you. Here are some to consider.

Iowa State University:


Explorations is a one-week residential program for students entering grades 9-11. During this one-week time period, students get a taste of college life while focusing on an area not typically available in their traditional school setting.


University of Iowa: Belin-Blank Center

Blank National Scholars Institute (NSI)

Through the Belin-Blank Center students may self nominate for this one-week residential program at the University of Iowa. Courses may be science, technical, humanities, or artistic in nature.

Belin Blank Center Summer Programs

Students who are currently in grades 10-11 may self nominate for the Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP), a six week residential summer research experience. Students will conduct scientific research in university laboratories under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students will also produce a research project/paper as part of the program.

Math and Science Opportunities

UNI and the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences (CHAS) offers 13 summer camps for middle and high school students on the UNI campus in the arts, humanities and the sciences! STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related camps help to make science fun and interesting. The topics of the hands on STEM camps range from building robots, to exploring the outdoors, to understanding how DNA evidence can be key to solving crimes. If art, music or theatre is more of your student’s thing, UNI is also offering many camps in the Humanities and Arts as well.

Leadership Institute

One week each June. The HSLI allows high school juniors to participate in a week-long summer institute where they study and practice leadership skills and service as a form of community and civic engagement. The week is highlighted by a trip to Chicago. Successful project and portfolios may result in 3.5 hours of transferable credit and/or a $1,000 renewable scholarship to Wartburg. March deadline for application.

IBA Summer Speech Institute

This is a one of a kind camp specifically designed for high school students who participate in Iowa Speech events. Experts teach on a variety of subjects, such as acting, interpretation, characterization, cutting, writing, researching, filming, editing, scene development, and more! Students learn basic skills from experts and get a chance to work hands-on on a project of their own choosing to put those skills into action.

Concordia Language Villages Summer Program

This program offers several opportunities. This is the premiere language and cultural immersion program in the U.S is located in Moorhead, MN.

US Military Academy Annual Summer Leaders Experience

This program provides outstanding high school junior the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the academic, physical and leadership development programs at a service academy featuring small classes, a caring faculty, professional career preparation and a foundation for future graduate study. About 500 11th graders will be invited to each session. Students must be in the top fifth of their high school class, pursue a college preparatory curriculum, have strong PSAT scores, have demonstrated leadership potential by participation, election/selection to office and honors earned in extracurricular and organized athletic activities.

US Military Academy Summer Leaders Seminar

Missouri University of Science and Technology Nuclear Engineering Camp

This is a one week introduction to Nuclear Engineering for high school juniors, seniors, and college freshmen. Camp will include tours, focus groups, and experiments.
