This year marks the 28th anniversary of the Linn-Mar Junior Lion Boys Basketball Tournament. The Junior Lion Tournament is actually 2 tournaments. The tournament for 5th & 6th-grade boys will be held on Dec. 8-9, 2018. The tournament for 7th & 8th-grade boys will be held on Jan. 26-27, 2019. The cost to enter either tournament is $130 per team for early entries, $140 for later entries (see entry information page below for details). All games are tentatively scheduled to be played at Linn-Mar High School. Teams are guaranteed 3 games & could play up to 5 games over the two days if the tournament is full. Linn-Mar High School basketball players work the scorers’ tables & we try very hard to have 2 certified officials working each game.
The Junior Lion Tournament is designed for school teams only. In order to participate in the Junior Lion Tournament all players must fit in one of the following 3 categories (No exceptions!): 1) All players are enrolled at the same elementary school/middle school/junior high, 2) All players are currently attending elementary schools that directly feed the same middle school/junior high, or 3) All players are currently attending middle schools/junior highs that directly feed the same high school. With open enrollment, anyone can say they are going anywhere next year. Our entries are based on where the player is currently enrolled. If a team has players that don’t meet at least 1 of the 3 conditions listed above but would still like to participate in the tournament, the team must play up one grade level higher than their “oldest” player.
We try to divide our tournament into balanced “pools” as best we can. On Saturday all teams will play 2 pool games. On Sunday, the teams are divided into 2 groups. Those with the best records (usually 2-0 or 1-1 on Saturday) go into our “Championship” bracket. Those that didn’t perform as well (usually 0-2 on Saturday) go into our “Consolation” bracket. On Sunday in the Championship bracket, teams play until they either win the tournament or lose, whichever comes first. Trophies are awarded to the winner & runner-up in the Championship bracket. On Sunday teams in the Consolation bracket also play until they win their bracket or lose. Medals are awarded to the winner of the Consolation bracket. Most years we are able to use this format. We changed to it several years ago and have found that most teams really like it. Using this format, no matter how strong or weak a team is, by Sunday they usually find teams of comparable strength.
